This season, we should be able to associate the face of the oppressed with the CNN flashes of Cario. When Keri and I visited Egypt last year, we saw people that have been living in the past. Egypt and other parts of the Middle Easy did not catch the lighting of liberty that much of the world has harnessed since the end of WWII. The people of Cario are not living in bounded slavery, but they are not free to express themselves and follow their dreams and desires. I consider myself very lucky to be in America. I take for granted the freedoms I enjoy on a daily basis. I can choose my associates, what religion I want to follow, and what political concept I embrace and stick on my bumper for all to see. In much of the world today, people go to bed holding their tongue, stiffing their ideas, and holding back innovation and human advances. The developments in the Middle East are scary and create a fragile political environment. Nonetheless, I am more excited about the potential of human alignment on a global scale in way I have not witness in my lifetime.

A common Jewish man or women in Egypt might not have foreseen what would happen as they followed Moses to the Red Sea. It might be years before we understand the impacts of the protest in North Africa. I will take time this season at Seder to think of possibilities for people around the world who taste their first salty drip of freedom. I hope you do as well.
